If America is to remain viable as a unified nation and as a democracy its young people must have a sense of civic responsibility, a sense of responsibility to and for the whole society. American democracy faces unusual stresses and challenges that underscore the importance of a knowledge of American history and of the great foundational documents that undergird our system of government….
