ABSTRACT

If America is to remain viable as a unified nation and as a democracy its young people must have a sense of civic responsibility, a sense of responsibility to and for the whole society. American democracy faces unusual stresses and challenges that underscore the importance of a knowledge of American history and of the great foundational documents that undergird our system of government…. Children need to know early what it means to be an American. They need to learn early a sense of responsibility for others. (John W. Chandler)
