American history of education profoundly influenced the early development of comparative education, though the basis of comparative education in historical studies of national systems virtually ground to a halt in the 1960s. In various ways and with different emphases and intentions, Robert Ulich, R. Freeman Butts, Henry Perkinson and Fritz Ringer have written about the West, about civilization, about Europe.
