ABSTRACT
During the period of General Emancipation blacks played an active role in the Abolition Movement of New York City, particularly as it developed more and more of the militant spirit after 1830. 1 One recent student of this period, for example, has included Theodore S. Wright, Henry Highland Garnet, Samuel E. Cornish, and Charles B. Ray among New York’s ten highest-ranking abolitionist leaders. 2
