ABSTRACT

There were many continuities from the Late Preceramic through into the Initial Period, but nevertheless significant changes do appear to have occurred. Many Late Preceramic temple sites were abandoned and new ceremonial complexes arose (see Figure 5.1). However, ceramics were adopted in many regions where they had not previously been used, and the heddle loom was now employed to make textiles-the two hallmarks of Initial Period culture. The widespread adoption of these technologies is a sign that new social relations were being formed, and they also provide archaeologists with more data by which to investigate the past.
