ABSTRACT

It was in 1886 that Gald6s completed the first part of Fortunata and Jacinta, and although this novel deals primarily with the revolutionary years of 1868-1874, it is clearly concerned not just with that period and its movement from revolution to reaction but also with the contradictions of

Restoration society and of bourgeois society in general. As Raymond Carr has suggested, the Restoration tried to incorporate peacefully all dissident forces in a futile effort to avoid social revolution. 1 In this study I shall examine - with particular reference to the unresolved class conflict - the portrayal in Fortunata and Jacinta of the hypocrisy of that attempt.
