The Church

What most distinguishes medieval Latin Europe from all other societies and cultures throughout the ages is the role of the ecclesiastical order, and especially the leadership of the Roman church. In 1301, Boniface VIII called Rome ‘the common court of all the nations of the Christian people’. ¹ Even Peter Dubois, Boniface’s enemy, seeking European unity under the French king, chose the pope to arbitrate Europe’s wars.
