ABSTRACT

On 23 December Dei Gratia sailed with her cargo of petroleum for Genoa, where she arrived on 16 January 1873. Captain Morehouse had remained in Gibraltar, entrusting Dei Gratia to the capable hands of Oliver Deveau, but neither the ship nor Deveau had received permission to leave and their action not only resulted in some stinging criticism from Judge Cochrane, but also, and perhaps more seriously for the men involved, in a salvage award that was considerably lower than it might otherwise have been.
