Being there: the creative use of location and post-production sound in documentaries Jean Martin

Introduction This chapter focuses on location sound recording and post-production approaches in documentary filmmaking. Location sound recording is analytical in the sense that it isolates sounds important for a film from the general ambience. Post-production sound is synthetic, because it resynthesises the particular location sound recordings into a full sonic environment, which creates the audiovisual reality of the film for the viewer.
