ABSTRACT

These are obviously not my own words, but words spoken by Peggy Mcintosh of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women. The work whose label disturbs her is, of course, Moby Dick. The words were her response to my brief attempts at introducing and identifying myself and my field, at the opening session of a year-long faculty development seminar---on integrating the study of women into the humanities disciplines-that she directed in 1982-1983.
