ABSTRACT

The bedrock of the healing profession is an individual relationship with the person in need. Certainly, someone presenting with a primary substance abuse problem qualifies as an appropriate candidate for help. With substance abusers, all forces necessary to deal with the problem must be marshaled, and a variety of approaches need to be utilized. The clinician is often in the role of individual counselor, case manager, therapist, and sometimes social engineer. Issues of addiction are usually problematic to deal with on an exclusively individual basis, and consequently the mainstay of traditional substance abuse treatment is group therapy, inclusive of the Twelve Step models.
