ABSTRACT

When the individual substance abuser poses an immediate danger to himself or others, then hospitalization is absolutely necessary. An example of this might be an individual with a history of heart attacks induced by cocaine who has relapsed, and despite having severe chest pains, is unable to interrupt his binge. A person with a history of severe alcoholism, who relapses and is unable to interrupt substantial drinking, would also need to be hospitalized, especially if that person has a history of significant symptoms of withdrawal.
