ABSTRACT
In this chapter we begin to piece together the evidence that explains the complex reactions of human beings to the loss of a loved person. To do that we need to examine the roots, in human anatomy and physiology, of our emotions and behaviour, and its origins in the non-human animals from which we have evolved.
