ABSTRACT
In Chapter 2 man and his role in development were discussed from an Islamic perspective. It was shown that one of the most important stages in the Islamic style of development is the 'spiritual stage' in which Islam calls upon man to purify his soul (tazkiyat al nafs). This base of Islamic development, namely self-purification and social ennoblement, defines the relation of all other kinds of development in Islam, its laws, its system, and its institutions (Outb, 1977).
