ABSTRACT

In Chapter 12 we saw how wars, particularly civil wars and guerrilla insurgencies, have had a negative impact on food security. We also demonstrated the political calculations and motivations behind food aid. This chapter continues the political theme, first by looking at food riots in the context of Structural Adjustment and, second, by suggesting that international food trade has undertones of geopolitical manoeuvring. In short, we will investigate global regulatory frameworks and their effect upon food.
