ABSTRACT
In the preceding chapters we have dealt with the religious, social, and intellectual factors that shaped, for better or for worse, universities and other institutions of higher learning. In this chapter, we will see how these factors merged into the modern university, at times enriching it, and at times producing confusion and tension.
