Introduction D em and for movement is a by-product of population, city size and vehicular growth. The rapid increase in urban population in India has put an enormous strain on the street network of var­ ious cities. Urban population is expected to grow to 550 million by 2021 *. In addition, the number of urban centers with population in excess of one million is likely to reach 55 by 2021, from 33 during 2001, as shown in Table 1.
