ABSTRACT

The tenn memory refers to several psychological processes that are related by their similar function of holding infonnation but may be fundamentally distinct. Infonnation that pertains to a particular episode and the value of which is transitory is said to be stored in and retrieved from working memory. Infonnation that pertains to mUltiple episodes and the value of which is more durable is said to be stored in and retrieved from reference memory (Honig, 1978). Reference memory contains both declarative knowledge (facts) and procedural knowledge (conditional rules). The tenn memory includes all of these concepts, and others. The biological bases of these different types of memory may not be the same, so it is important to describe clearly the type of memory under study.
