ABSTRACT

In this chapter, adolescent images of smoking and of smokers are explored using a qualitative technique. Conceptual mapping and subsequent content analysis enabled researchers to map the factors which constituted adolescent images related to smoking. This technique is described in the first section. The intrapersonal dimensions of smoking images are described in the second section. Interpersonal dimensions related to social status, social desirability and sophistication are considered in the third section. A network of interpersonal images is then discussed in terms of sociability, social inclusion and related behaviours. Finally, the physical attributes of smokers and nonsmokers are presented.
