ABSTRACT
Suppose you want to call up your friend, Joe Shablotnik, in New York City. To get Joe’s number, you dial New York information and make your request, whereupon to your chagrin the operator informs you that there are two Joe Shablotniks in New York. To clarify the issue, she asks what street your Joe lives on. Unfortunately, you can’t recall this information but, collecting your wits, you ask the operator for the addresses of both Joe Shablotniks. When the operator informs you that one Joe Shablotnik lives on Park Avenue, and the other Joe Shablotnik lives on Avenue D, you are instantly able to tell her that it is the Avenue D Joe Shablotnik that you want. Although you were not able to recall Joe’s address, you were able to recognize it.
