Coincidentally, coronation year also saw one of the most exciting of football cup finals, which stirred the sentiments of the country by bringing a winner's medal to one of its best-ever players, the veteran Stanley Matthews, who inspired his team to a gripping second-half victory. Even in black and white, the cup final was drawing over half the population of the British Isles to their screens, and television's sporting revolution was beginning.
