Growth and Crisis in the Pre-Fossil Era

While meeting humanity’s demand for biomass in our century may be a challenge, before the 19th century it was a daunting task. Expanding the supply of biomass was hampered by three fundamental constraints: the first was high transport costs; the second, slow innovation; the third, scarcity of inputs for raising the productivity of the land.
