In these last pages I would like to turn to those essays that address the more openly political and social issues. Few though they are, they have exposed her to a cross-fire considerably worse than she received for seemingly breaking the pact American critics had made with highbrow culture. She broke code with American anticommunism in the 1960s, and later in the 80s with anti-anticommunism. The replies have been stinging.
