ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the role that major international environmental conventions may play in ensuring environmentally sustainable operation of the ship-breaking industry. A number of international environmental conventions may be directly or indirectly relevant to the shipbreaking industry. These legal instruments can be divided into two groups: IMO marine environmental conventions, and international conventions for transboundary movement and environmentally sound disposal of hazardous wastes and other hazardous substances.
