ABSTRACT
The influence of the amenity movement and the ‘need’ to protect existing character against perceived threats is explored. The legislative response to the protection of the character of townscapes, neighbourhoods and buildings of interest through Conservation Areas and the control of development generally are critically explored. The chapter will also include a brief critical review of official guidance on what constitutes character and how it should be assessed.
