ABSTRACT
We have seen that literacy is sensitive to, and varies with, social and cultural factors. When the New Literacy Studies turned from individual minds to social practices it faced this sensitivity squarely. At the same time, people who took a sociocultural view of literacy tended to ignore minds and learning in any individual internalized sense.
