ABSTRACT

Where is English literature? As Pin-chia Feng observes, “[t]he English Departments in most Asian countries have a special mission which makes them very different from their counterparts in Britain and America,” the special mission being teaching the English language and increasing students’ language profi ciency (“A Brave New World?”). When literature does receive attention beyond the center, it seems to be largely from applied linguistics and EFL, meaning that ‘out here’ the teaching and learning of English literature has been relocated from the literature into the language classroom.
