Inwritingthischapter,weassumedthatouraudienceconsistsprimarily ofpersonalityandsocialpsychologistswhoareinterestedinmotivation andsocialcognition.Inasense,weconsiderourselves"outsiders"inthat ourbackgroundsareinorganizationalbehavior,humanresourcemanagement,andindustrialandorganizationalpsychology.Moreover,our primaryorganizationalaffiliationsaremanagementdepartmentswithin businessschools,thoughwemaintainsecondaryaffiliationswiththe psychologydepartmentsatouruniversities.Asoutsidersthen,what contributionmightweofferinthisbook?Atagenerallevel,wehopeto conveyhowresearchersinourfieldapproachandstudymotivationand socialcognition.Atamorespecificlevel,thischapterpresentsand discussestheresearchonamajorandinfluentialtheoryofworkmotivation,namely,goalsetting.
