ABSTRACT
Homesickness … that terrible piercing loneliness of small children cast out from their homes … is without question the most important single aspect of public school education; yet because it was the most painful it is the memory most usually repressed. But it is the unexpressed longing for their mothers and nannies, the comfort and safety of home, which defines the other deprivations.
