ABSTRACT
I learnt that lesson the hard way. It was during the Gulf War when a taxi driver asked where I worked – I answered
for Liberty (formerly the National Council of Civil Liberties). I momentarily forgot the pragmatic Yiddish folk saying I learnt as a child – “If
you want people to think you are wise, agree with them” and launched into a full throated defence of the principles of liberty and natural justice.
