For many there seems no significant difference between archaeology and history. Both are devoted to uncovering the past (although literally in the case of archaeology), both recognize the importance of historical chronology, and in broad terms there are strong parallels in how the two disciplines have developed. Are archaeologists, therefore, nothing more than historians with dirty hands?
