ABSTRACT

In Chapter 9 I examined some of the methods used to predict student success. Additional techniques are now emerging to analyse various aspects of learning. These are potentially of use in applications such as early alert and student success, course recommendation, adaptive learning and curriculum design. Each of the emerging methods draws from existing disciplines and applies them to learning contexts. Some of these are already longstanding and respected research fields, with existing applications in areas outside education. In this chapter I discuss three of the main techniques that are being applied in educational settings: discourse analytics; social network analysis; and sentiment and emotion analytics.
