ABSTRACT

I asked each of my panel of 20 experts what they thought the main challenges were around technologies and data. In many cases their answers centred on issues around ethics and privacy and concerns around human adoption, rather than relating to the technologies specifically. Physicist and astronomer, Timothy McKay feels, encouragingly, that:

A lot of the technical challenges are a little hard but they’re a lot less hard than many of the technical things I’ve done in my science career.

However difficult the technical issues are, the deployment of learning analytics will mean organisations having to integrate new systems. Even at relatively small institutions, says Josh Baron:

the amount of data we’re collecting per student is so much that you need … really big data systems at your institution … So understanding how to deploy and support and run those systems I think is going to be a barrier for places. But not an insurmountable barrier.
