ABSTRACT
While the young actor was at Manchester, the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth was celebrated with a series of readings and tableaux. The manager of the theatre, Charles Calvert, gave the readings. In the tableaux Mrs Calvert appeared as Sarah Siddons in the ‘grand fiendish part’, and Irving was chosen to represent Mrs Siddons’s brother, John Philip Kemble, as painted by Thomas Lawrence.
