ABSTRACT
When the curtain fell on the 100th night of The Merchant of Venice the scenery on the stage was struck, and Benjamin Edginton (of 2 Duke Street, London Bridge) was engaged to turn the stage into a banqueting hall suitable for 350 gentlemen, all of them outstanding in the fields of the arts, science, law, medicine, the army, commerce, literature, politics – and society.
