ABSTRACT
Hungary is a small (100,000 square kilometres) and ethnically homogeneous country in East-Central Europe. It had a population of 10 million in 1987 (see Table 5.1). This is beginning to decrease as a result of a declining fertility rate. This has also resulted in the emergence of an ageing population.
