ABSTRACT

In terms of the sheer number of people who have heard of Freud and his ideas, he is without doubt the most celebrated figure in the whole of psychology (see D3). A simplified view of psychoanalysis is that it is concerned with the unveiling of unconscious motives for much human behaviour, in particular the sort of abnormal behaviour that leads people to seek medical assistance. This in fact is essentially an accurate view. It is thus possible to see psychoanalysis primarily as a psychology of motivation.
