ABSTRACT

In this chapter we recommend strategies for strengthening connections with families by bringing parents into the classroom. You can invite parents into the classroom to share an expertise, passion, and experience, or to share in their child’s learning. Likewise, you can ask parents to join you in the classroom in the role of learners. In this role, parents are invited to come into the school to learn about new strategies or ways of presenting content. Charles and Sarah realize the benefi t of involving parents and the role that they play in supporting their children at home. Their primary goal is to show parents the new math strategies that the children are using so that parents can better assist children with homework. At the same time, the workshop will strengthen Charles’s and Sarah’s connections with the families, communicate that they have the children’s best interests in mind, and convey to children that home and school are connected.
