Day centres for the physically handicapped and training centres for the mentally handicapped provide for only a small number of school-leavers. The Tuckey survey was set up in 1968 under the sponsorship of the DHSS, DES and Department of Employment to investigate the range, availability and suitability of the facilities for further education, training and employment of handicapped school-leavers. A smaller proportion of them are severely disabled and have hydrocephalus than is true of today's teenagers, while a larger proportion than would probably be true today lacked both an adequate education and any sort of vocational training. The basic skills required literacy and numeracy are developed at school, while teaching in the more specifically clerical and commercial skills such as shorthand, typing, and book-keeping is also provided in the education system. The careers officer should be recognized as the co-ordinator in the team involved in any placement decision.
