ABSTRACT

The instructor plays a critical role in the success of an adventure learning session. The participants take their direction from them, feed off their energy and build their view of the session from the instructor’s behaviour, which defines the extent to which they engage and how much they interact. The adventure learning instructor is like an orchestral conductor, establishing the limits, expectations and guidelines for the experience. Effective practice rests on values; the adventure learning instructor has to develop a personal ethical base, developing their own framework of values. That is not to say adventure learning instructors have to set themselves apart from others, but should have considered responses to a range of issues and situations because of the nature of their work and the way that adventure learning operates.
