Gissing’s A erlife: A Century On (1906–2003)

I. Since 1906 the history of Gissing’s reputation has gone through various clearly di erentiated phases which re ect the evolution of his country’s history, political, social and cultural. It has been a ected by the political fate of the nation, by the evolution of its cultural life, of publishing methods, of the di usion of knowledge and by the ups and downs of public taste.
