This chapter discusses the goals and tasks of the first session with our client. It views the primary goal of a first session to be the creation of a relationship that is respectful and collaborative and in which we offer our knowledge and expertise to support the client to make changes in his life. Most clinicians in training feel somewhat anxious before their first session with a client and may wonder whether they can even be helpful to their clients. Most clinicians in training feel the informed consent process is a distraction from establishing rapport and giving the client a chance to tell his story, and many clients view the required paperwork as a distraction from their primary reason for seeking help. Issues related to confidentiality and sharing of information are part of the informed consent process and must be reviewed in the first session.
