As premised in the introduction to this book, although the qualitative study of online interaction implies the adoption of a qualitative epistemological premise, in practice the use of digital data for research purposes substantially differs from the standard dichotomy between quantitative and qualitative approaches. Our toolkit is a demonstration of this, insofar as it utilises a combination of techniques that are implemented in its overarching qualitative framework without necessarily being ‘qualitative’ per se. The most significant element of support for this claim is the use of social network analysis for the study of interaction across online environments.
