ABSTRACT
The image of celebrity diplomacy presented so far contains a striking disjunction. The ultimate objective behind this cosmopolitan activity is to further the oneness of humanity. A universal ethos is presented that is very much at odds with parochial attitudes and the tight restrictions of sovereignty. National (and self ) interests are played down, while a sense of global citizenship is emphasized.1 The idea is, to paraphrase Bono’s words from the U2 song “One”: “We’ve got to carry each other.”2
