ABSTRACT
Mary Anderson’s experiences with the health care system begin in January 2000.1 At that time, she was the mother of two children. Jim was eight years old and in the third grade. Lisa was four years old and in day care. Mary is divorced from the children’s father and has not seen or heard from him in over three years. The family lives in a public housing complex in Chicago.
