ABSTRACT

Each regime has its own moral values, prevailing ideas, and common sense.1 To achieve the drastic changes described in the previous chapter, we need a swift change in the basic values inculcated by corporate regimes throughout American history. This requires changes in our system of corporate capitalism, which has created an American Dream that is unsustainable. It is a dream of “more,” of what a popular video has called “the story of stuff.”2 Our corporate capitalism cannot survive without it. To ensure that Americans live by the corporate story of stuff, the current regime creates what I describe in this chapter as “coerced consumption” and “forced overwork.” Many Americans live in a dream world-believing that they make their own choices about their lifestyles based on their own values. This is, to a surprising degree, false. But let us consider first the values themselves.
