ABSTRACT

The Occupy Movement reinforced certain underlying truths. One is that the problem stems from an innate irrationality, which can only be addressed through deep changes in the entire economic and political system. A second is that the seeds of the future lie in the present. The year 2020, as we initially conceived it, was an eerie extrapolation of what was about to happen today in the United States. That helps explain why our analysis proved prophetic. But our present circumstances-in which the reality of surplus populations was becoming too great and painful to ignore-were an extrapolation of forces unfolding over hundreds of years, at least since the end of the Middle Ages. Our dystopia was actually a history and an account of today’s events, as well as a prognosis of things to come.
