ABSTRACT

When I was directing Syracuse Healthy Start, my then-seven-year-old daughter visited my office during a “take-your-daughter-to-work” day. I settled her into my office with crayons and paper, and then turned to a spreadsheet on my computer to calculate rates of low birth weight and infant death for that quarterly period. With profound disappointment in her voice, she asked, “Mommy, I know that your work is to help keep the babies from dying, but how can you do that by just doing math on your computer?”
