The law degree, for which Alexandru Dimitrie Xenopol had prepared himself during his four years of study, was based on his thesis on the principle of limited liability in Roman law. In addition to the work as a high school history teacher, Xenopol found work 'with our assistance', as Iacob Negruzzi later professed, in the magistrate's offices in Jassy, where the young specialist in Roman business law served as a public prosecutor. Just as Xenopol viewed newly independent Romania's economic affairs in their international context, he also analyzed the country's political situation in terms of the Great Powers and their interests. After completing the majority of his work as a historian, Xenopol then elaborated a theory of history with 'scientific' principles which he used to explain that which he meant by 'science' and to justify his historical writing as a 'scientific' achievement.
