MaryCarpenter(1807-77),thedaughterofaUnitarianminister, spentherlifecaringforthewelfareandeducationofdeprived youngpeople,includingjuvenileoffenders.In1846,shefounded aparticularlysuccessfulraggedschoolinBristol;in1854,she establishedRedLodge,thefirstgirls'reformatoryschoolin England.
