ABSTRACT

Our exploration of the convergence of Fair Trade and organic initiatives through these five case studies sheds light on various dimensions of the two initiatives as they have been applied within Asian agriculture. While each of these initiatives reflects a contradiction or tension between its two forms – as a movement and as certification – these case studies revealed that such contradictions can be more complex when the two initiatives are combined. What actually happens when they converge was revealed by attending to the different types of emergent contradictions or tensions.
